Can you follow a running plan on Apple Watch without a subscription?
By Stephan Seider, founder of V.Runner · Updated
You can follow a running plan on Apple Watch without a subscription. You can enter runs from a plan in Apple’s Workout app, do a free guided plan, or pick an app that charges another way. The important question is how much planning you want help with.
If you already love your Watch, you don’t need to replace it to give your running more direction. Think about your goals for the next few weeks. Do you want a clearer routine? A longer run? A goal time to work towards?
Choose how much help you want
| Your option | What it costs | Your part |
|---|---|---|
| Use a free plan with Apple Workout | No extra running-app subscription | Choose the plan, enter the runs and make changes yourself |
| Try a free guided plan | Nike says NRC has no in-app purchases | Check the plans, language and Watch options available to you |
| V.Runner’s planned credit offer | Packs after four free weeks; paid sales are not yet open | Check when credits are used and what help they include |
Already have a plan? Put the runs on your Watch
Apple’s built-in Workout app lets you create custom workouts with warm-ups, work and recovery parts, and a cool-down. You can set time or distance goals and add alerts for the pace you want to follow. Apple’s custom workout guide explains the controls for the current software.
If you trust your plan, you can enter the runs yourself. When your week changes, you decide what to move or leave out. You get to choose the plan and maintain it; the Watch helps you follow it. Available options may differ depending on your Watch and software version. For a practical walkthrough, read how to set up an interval run on Apple Watch.
Want guidance before paying? Look at free plans
Nike Run Club is one option. Nike has guided runs on some of their plans, and on their NRC page they say the app is free to download with no in-app purchases. Check what plan, language and Watch features are available to you; guided runs may not be available where you are.
A free plan is worth considering before paying. Look at the starting point of the plan to see if it lines up with your recent runs. Look at the week to see if it works with your schedule, and check that you understand what to do if a run feels hard. A price tag alone doesn’t answer those questions.
What does “no subscription” mean with V.Runner?
V.Runner takes your recent runs, shows you the distances and paces and gives you a training week. Recovery readings and your feedback can support suggestions to make the next session easier or shorter, which you can review before accepting.
Your first four consecutive training weeks are free, including the week you start, even if you join on Sunday. After that, a credit gives you a planned run.
Credits for the whole week are used together when you open or refresh that week’s plan. They cover planned runs, including any you later skip. Advice, changes to the plan and sending runs to your Watch are included. Weeks you never start using are not charged, and unused credits never expire.
The planned cost in the US is 0.99 USD for five credits. Apple shows you the price for your country before purchase. Purchases during the test through TestFlight do not charge real money. Paid sales require approval from the App Store, and the invitation determines whether you can be part of the test.
A simple credit example
Let’s say you’ve finished the free period and want to do three planned runs this week and four next week. Those two weeks use up seven credits. At the planned cost in the US, two five-credit packs would cost $1.98, and you would have three credits left for another week. Skipping a planned run does not return its credit.
This is just an example of planned runs after the free period. The local prices may differ. Check the current offer and terms of purchase to make an informed decision.
Before you choose a plan
- Can you start from the running you do now, with or without a race booked?
- Will you know how far and how fast to run?
- Can you follow it using the Watch app you want to run with?
- Who changes the plan when your week or your running changes?
- Is the total cost clear, including the end of any free period?
If you find that a free plan meets your needs, use it. To compare what paid plans offer, look at how coaching actually works. The plan still needs to fit you.
